Why are plums good for you?

Aesthetically pleasing and succulent, plums belongs to the Prunus genus of plants. Coming in different varieties, the fresh fruit is called plum and the dry fruit is known as prune. Fresh or dry, these tasty fruits provide a plethora of health benefits. So lets have a look at why are plums good for you and why you should make them a part of your diet.

Plums have been subjected to intensive health research due to their high content of unique phytonutrients called neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acid. These substances are categorized as antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent oxygen based damaged to fats. Since our cell membranes and brain cells molecules contain fat as a major constituent, plums provide a huge benefit by preventing damage to them.

Research has shown that plums facilitate the absorption of iron into the body and help prevent anemia. It is a very good source of Vitamin C which is needed in the body to make healthy tissue and to build a strong immune system. Hence the regular consumption of plums is highly beneficial to those frequently suffering from flu and allergies and even asthma. Plums are known to reduce risk of heart diseases, stroke and cancer due to their being a good source of potassium (one medium sized fresh plum contains about 113mg of potassium).

Plums are low in calories( 46 calories per 100g) and have no saturated fats. They are abundant in dietary fiber and hence are beneficial to those complaining about constipation. Relief is also obtained from other digestive problems. Plums rank low on the glycemic index and hence eating them helps control blood sugar level and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Plums help maintain the cholesterol at acceptable levels.

Plums are a moderate source of Vitamin A, Vitamin K and beta-carotene as well as the B-complex groups of vitamins such as niacin, Vitamin B-6 and pantothenic acid. These constituents make plums beneficial for good eye sight, improve clotting function in the blood and bone metabolism and help reduce Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly. They also provide protection from lung and oral cavity cancers. Vitamin K is also known to provide energy boosts and reduce muscular cramps.

Plums also have diuretic and detoxifying effects on the body. The presence of magnesium in plums relaxes the muscles and prevents premature contractions and labor in pregnant women. Preeclampsia, which proves to be fatal during pregnancy, can be avoided by regular consumption of plums since they regulate blood pressure.

Hence the inclusion of plums in our daily diet will go a long way in improving our health and fitness.
